Still on process

I finally have a short video clip coming up, although I am still modifying it.

I started this project with exploring my own existence, and now it is time to bring more people in.

I have created a new blog (http://tofutureself.blogspot.com/). I decided to start an activity called To my future self, which people are asked to write a letter for themselves in X years from now. They could either download a postcard template I made for them or write on anywhere they want, then send me a link so I can share/document some interesting results they have with other participants. After years, if they lose their postcards, they can come back to my blog and check their thing out.

Here are some process I have done with this idea.

For the blog, ideally, I am thinking to have the activity introduction in at least four different languages. And thanks to all my lovely friends, I now have English, Chinese, Korean and French.

Working process

I’m currently working on editing clips and combining them into a video. Instead of focusing on making perfect edges, I decided to keep the rough edges to create the feeling of stop motion video. I have shot six different directions for this set, I am now editing the third one.

Ideally, this is what I am planning to do for the final result of it.

Here is an interesting result I have got while I was editing and playing around with the clips.

Blowing water is another experiment I have played with.

I was trying to make a better/ cleaner shot during this week, but the problem of my immune system appears to my lips (it was also the reason why I was absent for our class). I still did some re-shots, but please excuses for me noting putting the whole thing here. (the hurt lips really ruin the video)

Here is a simple screen shot I have got from this weekend.

I changed the light settings and am really happy with the result I have got from that. I guess I will be able to finish all the shootings by this coming weekend because of all the experiments I had from last week. Then I will spend the rest of the week editing clips.

For the interactivity, I am thinking to make all the videos uploaded to a computer, and make a interactive platform to trigger different videos. The audiences will be asked to use their arms/hands/legs to trigger or control the computer in order to make the machine played, so the audiences will also experience their existence by these sort of exercise/physical movements.

For the platform, I was thinking to integrate puredata to it; however, opportunities always come up when you need it. My other processing class is going to design a interactive physical space for our final project, students are asked to integrate processing with a very trendy thing called Kinect. Therefore, I am thinking to combine these two project together and make the interactivity happen at the end of the term.

where am I?

I have shot several video clips of finding my own existence during the past few weeks. I have come across some shooting and editing difficulties, such as lightings and green screen room bookings. I re-filmed everything over and over again and ended up having almost 100 clips.

I also have some clips that I did not show in the class, here are some of the screenshots out of them. I may re-film them sooner or later.

I held my breath for couple seconds.

I jumped in different directions. As long as I jumped, my hair became more and more crazier.

I am happy with all the experiments I have so far, and will explore more in this week.

Video

Video is my first step for this project.

Water and paint will be one of the medium to demonstrate the concept of once a person is born, he/she starts to make the world runs differently than before in many ways, no matter in economically or physically.

Ex. White + red = pink … but pink can hardly purify back to white or red.

I will keep the video illusive but stumilate people to think deeper of their existence/ life.

I am now thinking at least to come up with three different videos for describing the concept.

2nd proposal- existence

I would like to tie my project with the a central concept- existence.

The existence of living. I think the only reason for existing/living is to speak. While I say to speak, I mean to express or to show a self-value. It does not matter what language you speak, or where do you live, the existence of you definitely means something to the world. Every individual in the world adds value to the society.

Therefore, I am thinking about to create an experience for viewers to explore their own understanding of existence. The exploration will be starting from watching an illusive video and then interactions. The interaction installation could simply be a big sheet of white paper, once someone draw something to it, a proof of they came to see the show marked and the whoever participant is adds value to the whole project. The whole concept is to discussion how people appraise themselves as an individual to the world.

My first target will be those people who are doubting themselves, who are looking for a reason for being born in the world. I am hoping at the end of this journey/experience, people will gain confidence and become positive of their existence.
